The good, the bad and the ugly

Daily writing prompt
What experiences in life helped you grow the most?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the bad experiences help you to stretch and reach further as a person, than the good ones.

Good experiences can be inspirational and make you want to do better, be better. But there’s nothing like the sting of a kick in the ass to make you stop and pay attention.

You have to endure and overcome adversity to build a set of characteristics that not only helps create a personality but it also provides an invisible shield to you and makes you strong.

I had a charmed life growing up but it was difficult at times in that my sisters and I were far from spoiled and we knew the value of hard physical work on the farm. We never owned the brand name clothes or had the video games and such, that other kids had. We didn’t have cable TV or even a VCR.

When I turned eighteen I fell head over heels with a real psycho and I know we use that term loosely these days so here are some descriptors: he was uber jealous, possessive, insecure, violent and manipulative. And he was thirty.

I’m over it now, been over it for years but it taught me a lot. It opened my eyes, big time. Nothing GOOD that could ever have happened, would have taught me what that two year journey taught me.

  3. I think I subscribe to your theory that bad times makes us better. I even think good times make us a worse person, we sort of get too full of ourselves and dismiss others. I’ve worked on way too many projects where the young kid gets to know something simply by being there and treats everyone else like crap, until he gets to a new project and he doesn’t know anything and then they have a hard time of it and get angry.

Sometimes people get stuck in the idea they know better than everyone else simply forever, because they know some particular thing at work. They are not good people. Anyway, just my observations!

So come on the bad times!

I just wrote a similar post. I cannot agree more! We have a lot more to learn from the valleys in our lives and they help us to appreciate the good times!!!

  6. It’s when we feel limited and stuck that we try to grow new means of connection and receiving life, so this very much tracks for me, with some exceptions. I can think of hard times that were just hard and I didn’t learn much from, and I can think of blissful times that expanded my notion of what was possible. Many thoughts sparked by your post. ❤
