Numb to the pain

Daily writing prompt
Have you ever had surgery? What for?

In my opinion, the more personal these questions, the better.

The only surgeries I’ve had were three cesarean sections. So the exact same surgery three times. Pretty lame.

Is a c-section scary? Well yes and no. I was numbed from the waist down by an epidural and wide awake the whole time. So I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not.

Of course it’s a joyous experience, a baby coming into the world, unlike a appendectomy where a useless inflamed organ is being removed and tossed into a kidney basin.

The first c-section wasn’t as scary because I had no idea what to expect and after fifteen hours of labour, that epidural was a gift from the heavens, I could no longer feel the contractions that had attacked me all night long.

The second and third c-sections caused a lot of anxiety because I knew exactly what was about to happen.

What if the anesthetist put the catheter for the epi-morph in the wrong spot on my spine and caused me to be paralyzed? So many ridiculous thoughts entered my mind, I think it was the closest I’d ever come to having a panic attack and I contemplated asking for Lorazepam. But I got through it and thankfully everything worked out fine.

Onto other things, summer is really a wonder. I still can’t get over the fact that this world I live in that is frozen and snowy and frigid for most of the year had been replaced by warmth, heat, greenery and sunshine that feels like a grampa’s hug. It’s just so beautiful outside.

Bella-Lena and I went to the thrift store yesterday and after at least thirty minutes of pouring over the books, we came home with four. I’m so pumped.

I started one of them as soon as we got home. It was written in the 1940’s! By a Canadian author no less. It’s called As For Me and My House, by Sinclair Ross and so far, so good.

  4. Sorry, I read the first few sentences and had to stop. Jeez Louise! I get pain up the back of legs when I see surgeries or otherwise see people in pain, I think it’s from my mum whacking me on my legs with the wooden spoon as a kid. But maybe not.

      1. Well, I jokingly blame my mum. I just asked AI about this and apparently it’s quite common, up to 30% of people get it and it’s called ‘vicarius’ pain. You get it because you empathise with the person. So I’m too empathetic apparently, and I can understand what it’s like being other people too much. Who wooda thunk.

      2. Yeah I get that but only with my kids, if they have a stomach bug and are vomiting etc, my stomach literally hurts….however they feel sick, I feel sick as well.
