Right here & now

If you could start a collection of anything, what would it be and why? (Thanks for the prompt Rojie!)

If I had unlimited space, I’d like to collect just a few antique kitchen appliances, small ones. When I was a teenager I worked for an auctioneer. Maybe this was when my love of junk was born.

Though I was technically working during the auction sales, I could bid on things that I wanted. I bid on a ‘lot’ one time at a household auction and inside the box was an old metal toaster. (A lot at an auction sale means they group together a bunch of items and sell them as sort of a bundle, instead of selling each little thing seperately.)

At first I didn’t know what this metal box was actually. It didn’t look like toasters do today, there were no slots to drop the bread into.

After inspecting it for a few minutes I realized that the chrome sides of it opened and you set the bread inside then closed the door so only one side toasted at a time. You’d have to keep track of the time and know when to open it back up and flip your bread.

I thought it was so cool. Unfortunately in the midst of all my moves away from home, to the city, back home, etc I must’ve tossed it as I just didn’t want to cart it around anymore. But I really regret not keeping it.

I recently bought this beaut at a thrift store and really don’t know exactly what it is but one would assume it’s some type of juicer.

I just love that old green colour on it
Last year on this day compared to now, we actually DIDN’T end up getting the crazy amounts of snow they forecasted for us, all we got was lots of freezing drizzle and insane winds, but we had enough snow anyway as you can see

there were alot of things back then that could legitimately translate over to modern life. whether it’s by build quality or a specific problem solved. i am surprised when I run into items like that and I do think that they should be kept. but just like what happened with you, they sadly get misplaced or lost. I think alot of it has to do with how much and how fast we obtain and replace items. back then in the 70’s and 80’s there was an understanding that if you bought something you’d keep it for life. and I’m sure that attitude was rooted in the 30’s and 40’s. 1. Imagine what a big deal it must’ve been when toasters that do both sides at the same time AND pop up when done were invented lol

        lol! right! πŸ˜€

i also forgot the last point to my comment – in that some items become stepping stones or evolutions towards what we now take for granted as “duh, why wasn’t that done originally?” LOL
