Chickpeas

What worries you about the next 5 years?

When I teach my students about certain chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes or even dementia, I talk to them about modifiable versus non-modifiable risk factors. Modifiable risk factors being things like smoking, exercise, alcohol intake etc.

There are habits or ways of living that can either lead to towards disease or keep you away from disease, statistically speaking of course.

So I try to live a lifestyle in which I am doing all I can to be and stay healthy. I include the good things and try and stay away from the bad things. I’m not out here running marathons and only living on chickpeas and cottage cheese, although lately it is one of my favourite lunches. Last evening I did talk Sid into coming to Dairy Queen with me because I was craving a cookie dough Blizzard. Everything in moderation, right? (I did get the mini size.)

But it’s not always enough. I’m sure we all know or knew that person who did everything right yet they were still grabbed and taken down by something awful like cancer or a heart attack.

I guess I have a problem with the unknown. Not knowing if I will live healthily and in an able body for at least another twenty years. It’s scary.

Sid, kindergarten grad, we did a “photobooth” at his little class party using an Instax camera but omg what a gong show getting all the five year olds to cooperate lol, I took this the next day with my phone

  1. you are so fortunate to be able to go to a Dairy Queen for a Blizzard. i love those – i think i got the oreo marshmallow ones. Anyway, if I wanted to go to the nearest Dairy Queen, I’d have to make sure I’m concealed carry, wear a helmet and have a gunner in the bed of the truck ready to use the minigun at a moments notice.

but the Blizzard is almost worth it. almost. ;D

    Happy Sunday! Mike

  2. This is very true, CJ. We can do everything right and still get a devasting illness, but why not invest in ourselves? Why not put some effort into living our best life?

  6. All we can do is the best we can, exercise and eat as healthily as we can. As for the rest… oh well, we can’t think too much about the future. It gets overwhelming.

  7. That photo of Sid is definitely photo album worthy! I like chickpeas and all beans a lot. I have a recipe for a really great chickpea salad, and if you mash up kidney beans into a paste and spread it on bread with a little mustard it can taste like a good old bologna and mustard sandwich. I was reading the other day how important hydration is to prevent dementia and I never knew that.
