It’s a wonder

What fascinates you lately?

This morning I left a lengthy comment on one of Fairweather Walker‘s posts about relationships. I’m not fascinated with this “lately”, I’ve been fascinated with this for years.

Probably since my own marriage ended when I was thirty-seven. Growing up, I never thought much about relationships because my parent’s was rock solid. No cause for concern.

But after I left my marriage, I became very interested in how couples stay together and why they split up. I remember talking to a coworker, who was old enough to be my mom, about how her first marriage had ended and why. She held nothing back and had lots of advice for then newly separated me.

I told her I’d love to write a coffee table book of real, short stories about why people’s marriages ended. Why am I obsessed with this? I don’t know.

Almost as interesting as why marriages fail, is why do they last? How do you stand living with this one person for decades, day in and day out? Are certain people more built for this?

Maybe the trick is not to overthink it. Or think about it at all. Just stay busy and carry on with life. If I delve more into this, I will have to do it anonymously lol.

But yep, people and relationships (the marital kind) are what fascinates me.

And besides that, I’m so happy to be back home. Still in bed. Summer is a wonder. I can’t stop saying that in my head when I look around at all the greenery and the sunshine and the flowers blooming.

I’m off now for the summer, although I still have one evaluation left to go over with a student. I’m going to use my mornings to workout, try this “get in the best shape of my life” thing. Also, give up sugar again.

I’m picking up the cheque from the lawyer this morning, the net proceeds from the sale of my rental property. I’m not sure how much I’ll end up with but the plan is to use it to go on a holiday or hopefully two. I know I should be investing the money but I’m in a YOLO mindset as tomorrow is not promised.

Know what’s funny, I lost my glasses at the campground somewhere, like they are gone! Good thing I have a few extras. Also, I came home with a summer cold. Yuck.

  1. I think romcoms and other fantasies have enabled the “he/she completes me” narrative. You really gotta complete yourself. Plan those trips!

    1. I think you’re absolutely right Mary, it’s foolishness, that train of thought!

    2. Romcoms have given audiences, particularly women to whom they’re generally marketed, gross misrepresentations of relationships and marriage.

Mary, I agree with you 100% about “complete yourself“. I have spent the last few years doing that and I have loved every second of it!

  2. i hope that check is a nice one Ceej. maybe you can go to that awesome vacation spot with the ocean views!

as for relationships and monogamy, i loved your comment on Fairweather’s blog. i think it’s worthwhile to see the commonalities in relationships that last versus relationships that don’t. there really is a logistical science behind this, whether it’s in the emotional domain or the physical one (i.e. taking out the garbage, not using sharp comments at someone, etc.). 3. I think marriage and long-term relationships are an absolutely fascinating subject! It’s not for everybody, and yet society, all but demands that we get married.

There’s a divorce attorney who I follow on social media who often asks the question “why is it considered impolite to ask someone ‘WHY are you getting married?’ rather than automatically congratulating them?

    1. Omg that’s such a great question…i think there’s whole wedding thing is honestly more of a female issue like women just want their day in the spotlight and to dress up like princesses…it’s such a waste of $

    2. I asked someone that once and she was offended. Silly woman.

      1. I feel like if someone is justified in the reasons for getting married and their reasons are sound, they should have no problem answering the question “why do you want to get married?”

To me, the dirty looks, the anger, they all are just a mask for insecurity

  5. It is interesting, CJ. We know couples who argue, don’t agree on anything, and yet they stay together. Others seem great and break up. There are so many variations in marriages. It’s complicated.

  8. I like to observe not just people who have been together a long time, but the ones who obviously still like being together. I met a couple like that yesterday, and like others I’ve noticed, humor and humility seem to be of huge importance. My ex was funny, but didn’t have the other component, so the humor could be hurtful at times.

  9. Thanks for the shout-out, CJ.
I wish I knew what the stay-together glue is.
Maybe it’s like George Harrison’s wife said when asked how they’d maintained a long marriage: “Don’t get divorced.”
It’s important not to expect your spouse to fulfil all your needs. That’s a no-brainer.
As much as I, too, am interested in figuring it out, I don’t think I’m any further ahead than you or anyone else.
    Every circumstance is so different.
If I had it to do over – if this long cohabitation I’m in doesn’t continue – one thing I advise is Don’t Live Together. That’s how I’d do it if there was a next time. Then when one of us is crabby, they could stay home and not plague me with their bitchiness. Or they could toddle off home if they were at my place. We wouldn’t be stuck together. But then maybe we wouldn’t bother to get together again either! See? It’s a crapshoot!

  10. Sorry to hear about the cold. Summer colds suck. I think a coffee table book of short stories, both real and fiction, about marriages ending (or lasting) is a cool idea. If I had to guess why you’re obsessed with it because it was a significant event in your life and because you’re interested in human behavior. I think the key to a marriage lasting or ending is how the word “love” is defined by the couple.
