Girls

What are you proud of?

I’m proud of myself when I can open a new jar of pickles without any help.

I was really proud of myself when I was able to start the fire all on my own (okay with a little help from Sid) last weekend when we were camping.

Proud of myself for turning down sugar and eating uber-healthy on the days I choose to do so.

I’m proud of my past, as in the childhood days I spent working on our farm. Driving tractors, grain trucks and operating other large machinery, working with the cattle, to help Dad around the farm.

It was his birthday yesterday (Dad’s) so naturally I spent a bit of time in my mind going over memories of him. He really instilled self-confidence in me, I believed him when he said “you can do this!”. With no sons to help with work in the fields, he only had us girls to rely on.

He’d say “girls can do anything boys can do, better”, cause what choice did he really have?!

  2. Wonderful photos and memories with your Dad. It’s so great that he didn’t perpetuate sexist ideas of who can do what—even if had no choice. My father grew up on a farm and was the CLEAR favorite over his 3 sisters. My aunts just accepted it.

  6. Your dad was so right about girls doing things better. It’s a fact that was mentioned by the male instructor when I attended a Women in Trades workplace tryout for mechanical work, which is overwhelmingly a trade men usually train for. He said the women in his classes were more careful, more detail-oriented, and more thorough.
I love the top pic of you and your dad. Absolutely beautiful. It’s obvious how proud he is of you and to be your dad.

  8. “girls can do anything boys can do, better”. You asked what choice did he have and not only did he have a choice in what he thought/said, but he’s right. I’m late, but Happy Birthday, Mr. CJ’s Dad!
