With just a smile

What’s a song that you can relate to?

After days of my laptop threatening to restart, this morning it decided it could not wait another five minutes so it interrupted me and did just that.

I had this great idea though, as you’re sitting there waiting for it to restart, maybe it could tell you jokes to help pass the minutes?

Like “please keep your computer turned on…it will restart in 17 minutes…why did the chicken cross the road?”

Lame? Yeah maybe a bit.

My answer to this prompt is lame too.

So when I was seventeen-ish and first discovered Eagles’ music, (don’t ask me how I went seventeen years never hearing of them, I guess the rock I lived under was that large), I led a bit of a boring life. When I heard the song “Lyin’ Eyes”, I became obsessed with it.

My young and very naive self thought, what a cool scenario. Young girl marries an old man so she can live comfortably and have not a care in the world but she has an actual true love, (guy her age), who she sneaks out to be with.

I still think the opening lyrics are so cool:

City girls just seem to find out early

How to open doors with just a smile

It was this whole revelation to this country bumpkin, wow, yeah that’s absolutely true, girls can magically open doors with just a smile.

Anyway, nobody would actually want to find themselves in the situation this song describes, but in my teenage brain, bored on the farm out of my mind, I really thought it would be cool.

Here it is in case you want a listen, I was only one year old!

This would have been ’99 I think, flanked by my Dad (left) & my former FIL (right), we met in a town halfway between where we all lived to make wedding plans

  1. You look so much like your dad here! And it’s a complicated song! I remember really liking “Love the one you’re with”, which I can’t listen to now!

As for Eagles, I still really like Desperado.

      1. It’s not an Eagles song, but it’s a not-happy song posing as a happy song. 🙂

  2. Sadly I think the “sugar daddy/sugar baby” scenario lives on and is bigger than ever. A young woman I met through a friend’s daughter explained it to me like it was an actual job—getting rich guys to buy her stuff.

      1. 🙉! My daughter made me watch a “Real Housewives of Rhode Island” and this was happening and I was out immediately. I must be too old! I thought it was sickening, she thought it was entertaining.

      2. Yeah idk if i’d wanna watch it on tv, I’m not a real housewives of anywhere fan!
But yes it does exist. I firmly believe women can get whatever they want by making their own money but at the same time if a foolish man wants to spend his money on them, i say take it lol

  3. i love that song Ceej! and the words in it are so true.

this is also why i use the term “goin to the cheatin’ side of town” alot, even if it’s completely unrelated to what’s being talked about lol 😀

  6. I had that thought in my twenties, too, and how life changed in my thirties, thinking singlehood looks like my calling.🤭

    1. Nothing wrong with singlehood! All that matters is you’re happy 😃

  7. I like the early Eagles stuff but I don’t like the Lyin’ Eyes song. She marries a rich guy so she’ll have an easy life and then she cheats on him and then later she gets drunk and hangs her head and cries. I can’t feel sorry for her.
