Not so gentle

Write about a scary or spooky encounter you had.

Twenty-five years ago I was attacked by a horse. Yes, a horse. That’s (luckily) the only time I can recall really being scared for my life.

I was walking along the riverbank at my parent’s place, thankfully their Rottweiler dog was with me. From a distance I could see my Aunty Judy’s horse staring me down and then suddenly, he was charging towards me.

I didn’t move at first because I was thinking, what will he actually do to me, surely he’ll stop running once he gets close. I grew up around horses and was absolutely not afraid of them.

But when he got closer I realized, holy crap, he’s not stopping. His ears were back and he was coming at me. So I ran up the bank into the trees and towards the barb-wire fence. He ran up the bank nearly as fast as I did and today I only remember flashes of what happened.

I got on the other side of where two trees seemed to have grown up from one and I recall this big brown beast rearing up at me, front hooves in the air.

My parents dog started barking ferociously at him. The horse turned on the dog and went after him.

I was able to escape the rest of the way up the river bank and over the fence to safety.

When I told Aunty Judy about the encounter later she brushed it off, or seemed to not believe he was trying to kill me saying, oh he likes to play around like that. Yeah right.

I have this love/hate relationship with b&w photos
Right before I deleted my FB account I purchased this little doozy of a lamp on FB Marketplace, I will miss that

  2. we were treating cows and calves for pink eye…a calf was getting away and my brother-in-law said “stop him”. So I got in front of a charging calf and promptly got run over…

      2. Lol I’m thankful that I never had to find out what that feels like. Having my bare feet stepped on as a kid by our shetland pony was as much pain as I had to bear.

  3. you have an eye for aesthetic vintage! the lamp is great and i love both the framed art portraits in the back as well as how you arranged them.

i helped to break in a few horses as a ranch hand, an angry horse is a force of nature and you know its disposition even at a distance. Mike

  4. That was definitely scary. I’ve never experienced anything like that before, but I would have done the same thing you did.

  5. Something similar happened to me! My father-in-law had a small herd of horses that included one stallion, and that bastard came after me when I was walking in the pasture as I often did (I got myself on one side of a tree to keep away from him). After that I couldn’t go into the pasture anymore but when I stood at the fence, he’d try to reach and bite me.

  6. Love the lamp! I’ve never heard of a horse running at someone like that. Maybe he was misguided and wanted a hug. 🙂

  9. I grew up around horses and I can well imagine your fear! I think your Aunt was a bit misguided in her comment. Horses, like any animal, can be unpredictable
