The blue envelope

What are some objects that you can’t throw away because they are a piece of you?

The kids’ baby teeth. Twenty-some years later are still in little miniature plastic treasure boxes in my underwear drawer. Between 2013 and 2020 I moved four times and each time, the teeth came along.

A blue envelope with a note from my Dad on it. Years ago when I was married to my ex-husband and my 3 older kids were small, Dad took the bus up here so that he could drive home his little truck that he had lent to us. (We no longer needed it.)

When I got up the morning he was to leave, he was already gone. But before he left he had found a pen and an envelope from some junk mail and left us a note that nearly made me cry.

The tough old farmer said something to the effect of “thanks for everything and for sharing those beautiful little kids with us, love Dad”.

I have it put away somewhere. He was a lot softer in those days, wow.

  2. not gonna lie Ceej – that note would probably put some dust in my eye.

So nice you keep those things that are tangible reminders of your kids. My mother still has one or two of my baby clothes in one of her boxes. Mike

  3. What a great photo!
I keep notes like that, too. For now.
Unsolicited advice: put something in with those baby teeth to absorb moisture. I didn’t, and they had to be thrown out. Oh the agony! LOL

  4. So sweet! Every once in a while I will pick up some book I inherited from my dad and find my dad’s handwritten notes in the margin. Even though his marginalia was definitely not emotional, I get very sentimental about those books!

    1. I get that Joe! I have my Gramma’s old Bible and though it’s not something I would read, just touching it, flipping through the pages and knowing she handled it sends warm fuzzies through my body 🥰

  8. I’m sure my wife has somewhere our son’s baby teeth and a piece of hair from his first haircut. The only thing I have is the first rock he picked up and played with when he was about 2.

  10. I’m a bit of a collector like that! I have a letter my Dad wrote to me when I left home at 18. It brings back memories of when I used to go to the red telephone box at the end of the road where I lived and ring him at 6 pm every Sunday night 🥲
I also kept mementoes like the little wrist bands my children had in hospital when they were born, the umbilical clips, the first babygros they wore etc etc. And don’t get me started on how many Christmas and birthday cards I have in boxes in the loft 🤣
