Are we onto something?

What made you happy this month?

Today marks the start of my now twelve year relationship with Clint. We sometimes refer to it as our “anniversary”, although we don’t celebrate it and never have. He gets off the hook pretty easy that way, there’s no planning involved, no gifts exchanged, no special dinner. No flowers.

As most of you know, I’m fascinated by long-term relationships. The kind that span decades. I think about it a lot. And two days ago when I was getting out of the car in our driveway with a bouquet of flowers that I bought for myself, I wondered for a second if he was watching from his chair next to the living room window.

I wondered for a second if, when he sees me coming home with flowers for myself, does he ever think, damn, I should have bought her flowers. I’m not pitying myself. Not at all. I just wonder. (He does buy me flowers usually once a year on Mother’s Day).

That thought led to thinking about how he and I are both good at making ourselves happy. We don’t expect the other to do that for us. What I want for myself, I buy or do. What he needs to be happy, he does for himself.

Maybe (for some people), that’s the key? Or is it messed up?

The friend with the endless cycle of fights with her boyfriend was complaining again the other day about how sad and disappointed she had been with the thoughtless gift he gave her for her birthday.

I stopped being that person more than twenty years ago, when I was still married to my now ex-husband. I refuse to be disappointed by thoughtless men, so I started buying or even just picking out my own gifts. That’s how Clint and I do my birthday and Christmas gifts, (unfortunately they are four days apart which makes it extra hard).

Anyway, back to the making yourself happy thing, I’d really love to know if others think it’s sort of messed up, or are we onto to something?

This was at the beginning of June, taken in the library at the hospital where I set up my temporary “office” as my students did their practicum

  3. I believe we’re each responsible for our own happiness and nobody wants to live with a miserable person! So keep buying yourself flowers🌷 I don’t think it’s messed up at all.

I can very much empathize with us. I’m not into buying myself flowers, but I do see that the key to the happiness in my relationship with my boy is rather than complaining or trying to change him. We both do the things that make ourselves happy and occasionally crosses over as well 🙂

Also, I don’t think we’ve ever celebrated in the anniversary even though we’re super happy together for 16 years

      1. Honestly makes me feel relieved lol because it seems like so many people (couples, well mainly the woman) revere big celebratory anniversaries! And we’re just not like that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I like doing fun things and anniversaries are good excuses, but certainly not necessities

  6. I think it’s totally OK to do things for yourself to make you happy. But it really is a neat feeling when your partner just does something out of the blue because they know you’ll like it or they know it’s something that you can use.

In fact, just yesterday, Sierra got me an essential oils diffuser for my classroom. I didn’t ask for it. It wasn’t even something that I talked about possibly picking up. But it was something that we talked about in some conversation about the new school year. She just took the initiative and got it.

    1. You’re right, it does feel nice when someone is thoughtful! I think he used to be more like that in the first couple of years to be honest.

  7. i think you’re onto something.

there is something to be said for unique and specific gestures and relationship tokens that involve a customized degree of decoupling.

like, for example, me: there is no amount of money anyone can pay me to make me cohabitate with someone ever again. my time and resources are separate. and there’s a hard cap between where my efforts are known and when it ends.

but when I’m there, I’m there and it’s the same for a woman. in that way, we both realize that our time is precious and that we are both getting something out of it on our own terms

  8. Waiting for someone to change, or change for you, is a fools bet. You will never be full filled, only given breadcrumbs and lies to make you stay under their control.

  9. My perspective, for what it’s worth, is as a couple you have to do what is right for you. No two couples are the same and providing you are both happy with whatever arrangement you come to then that’s fine.
I have a tendency to celebrate the day we met (July 4th) and my husband likes to celebrate our wedding anniversary (July 9th -it was the closest Saturday to the day we met when we eventually got married after 2 years of postponements due to Covid) . Last year we celebrated 10 years together and had a lovely break in London, which I organised and then on our wedding anniversary my husband took me out for a surprise dinner.

  10. I think if it works for you you’re onto something and that’s all that matters. I’m not sure if that would work for me because I like the whole process of gift giving. Thinking about what would be a good gift, and shopping for it, and buying it, and then the surprise of them opening it, I like all of that stuff. Happy non-anniversary to you and Clint!

I think i’m not opposed to receiving nice gifts that i didn’t have to pick out or purchase myself, but i’ve just never had that i guess. And I’m really not one for romance, wining ‘n dining…although come to think of it i’ve never really had that either lol

  12. Congratulations! I think you are doing well. Finding gifts is such a pain sometimes. Most of the time, I just give money so they can buy whatever they want. That includes my wife, unless she tells me what she wants and I buy it for her. I don’t like receiving gifts, and I don’t expect anything. My family knows it and typically doesn’t send me anything. So the way you’re doing it is perfect.
