Seeing over the wheel

Who taught you how to drive?

Dad taught my sisters and I to drive and we started pretty young.

I think he wanted to get us driving so that we could help do stuff around the farm, so I started driving the half-ton at age 9, the tractor when I was 11.

Some of my Dad’s fields were quite far from our house so when he would drive the tractor with, say, the cultivator or the harrows attached, to the field where it would take days to do the entire field, he’d need a ride home at the end of the day.

Or he’d drive the equipment out to the field in the morning before school and have one of us come and pick him up with the truck. He’d then drop us back off at home to get ready for school and take the truck back to the field, then having wheels to get to and from.

I loved driving then and I still love driving now.

  4. You must have been a tall kid—I know a lot of 9 year olds who wouldn’t be able to reach the pedals on a half ton truck!

      1. Yes 😔. I think I got my license when I was 18 or 19, but I can’t remember exactly.

  6. Driving a half-ton at age 9 and a tractor at 11 to shuttle your dad around fields before school is classic farm life! As MaryG and Joe noted in the comments, looking back on reaching those pedals at that age is wild. Such a fun, nostalgic read, CJ!

  10. Such wonderful memories you have CJ and very typical for farm life.
Some of the lanes I drive around here are quite narrow and on the odd occasion I have to stop because there is some farm equipment coming the other way such as a combine. Whenever I check out who is driving they look about 16! I guess I’m definitely getting old.
