Seeing over the wheel

Who taught you how to drive?

Dad taught my sisters and I to drive and we started pretty young.

I think he wanted to get us driving so that we could help do stuff around the farm, so I started driving the half-ton at age 9, the tractor when I was 11.

Some of my Dad’s fields were quite far from our house so when he would drive the tractor with, say, the cultivator or the harrows attached, to the field where it would take days to do the entire field, he’d need a ride home at the end of the day.

Or he’d drive the equipment out to the field in the morning before school and have one of us come and pick him up with the truck. He’d then drop us back off at home to get ready for school and take the truck back to the field, then having wheels to get to and from.

I loved driving then and I still love driving now.

  3. I’ve witnessed a three-year-old boy driving a half-ton around a farmyard, and I was appalled!
